Oil Pulling

You swallow more than a litre of saliva a day, so if your mouth is full of ‘bad guys’, you’ll be drinking these nasty bacteria all day, every day. Eeeeewwww!

Oil pulling is one of the best ways to remove bacteria and promote healthy teeth and gums!

Used primarily in Ayurvedic medicine, oil pulling is a fantastic oral detoxification procedure that is simply done by swishing a tablespoon or two of oil around in your mouth for up to 20 minutes.

Oil pulling works by cleaning (detoxifying) the oral cavity in a similar way that soap cleans dirty dishes. It literally sucks the dirt (toxins) out of your mouth and creates a clean, antiseptic oral environment that contributes to the proper flow of dental liquid that is needed to prevent cavities and disease.

HOW TO DO OIL PULLING

1-  Put 1-3 teaspoons of oil in your mouth. You can choose between any good quality cold-pressed coconut oil, olive oil, sunflower oil or sesame oil. You can rotate between these, as they all have slightly different properties. You can experiment and see which one suits you best. If you have salicylate sensitivities, we recommend using sunflower oil.

2-  Swish for up to 15-20 minutes. The oil will get thicker and milky as it mixes with saliva during this time and it should be creamy-white when spit out. 20 minutes might be hard to do at first, so start with a few minutes and build it up until you can do 15- 20 minutes.

3-  Spit the oil into the bin. Don’t spit into the sink! Do not swallow the oil as it is hopefully full of bacteria and toxins that are now not in the mouth!

4- Rinse well with warm water.

5-  Brush your teeth.

DETOX REACTIONS

Some people notice a detox reaction for the first few days of using oil pulling that usually includes mild congestion, headache, mucous drainage or other effects. This should only last for a few days.

It can be helpful to do the oil pulling a few times a day when getting started to kick start the process, especially if you are experiencing some detox reactions.
